Hg2 : The Hedonist

Gilead

Admittedly its Corktown location is not prime for dining out in Toronto, but this hasn’t dented its popularity. Café by day, bistro by night – this unpretentious venture has jars of colourful preserves lining its walls. Kennedy was the city’s cooking wunderkind when he started 25 years ago, and here he goes back to basics with a chalkboard of authentic French-inspired dishes such as coq au vin and crispy pork belly with lentils (the concept is to share several plates).

His signature French fries – twice-cooked, finished with two types of salt and fresh thyme – is emblematic of how he baulks at mediocrity. He rears cows on his farm (look for JK beef on the menu), makes his own wine (a JK Pinot Noir & Chardonnay) and personally greets each of his guests.
