Hg2 : The Hedonist

Sotto Sotto

Lasagne, osso bucco, eggplant parmagiana – all the best family dishes from Rome and Naples are lovingly prepared here in the homeliest of the Italian restaurants in Toronto.

Clams steamed in Pinot Grigio are succulent and garlicky, and the Dover sole is whole, and grilled to perfection. So reliable is the quality that this is the city’s failsafe – rendering it packed every night, so book early.

With low ceilings and distressed walls it’s made to resemble an old Roman wine cellar, intimate and with plenty of charm. It’s romantic but not nauseatingly so, and is devoid of any pretention. The walls are lined with photographs of Mamma getting up close and personal with a raft of celebrities in the restaurant (and it would be quicker to list who hasn’t dined here).
