The Bay Queen Street
Founded in 1690 by King Charles II, The Hudson’s Bay Company dominated the fur market in eastern Canada. It evolved into a massive retail enterprise that now includes the biggest department store chain in the country. It offers mid-range to sky-high fashion, as well as cosmetics, jewellery, perfume, accessories, home furnishings and an array of services. It also houses a men-only grooming salon (see Spa) – American John Allan’s first foray into Canada. The Bay has 92 locations across the country but the landmark at Young & Queen is establishing itself as a competitor to Holt Renfrew. On the third floor ‘The Room’ is an exquisitely-curated gallery of labels – Canadian, international and European haute couture – splendidly showcased with luxury changing rooms and a VIP suite.
