Hg2 : The Hedonist

Bata Shoe Museum

In a Raymond Moriyama-designed building that resembles a four-storey shoebox, the exhibition of 12,500 shoes spans 4,500 years of chronological shoe history. The rotating collection includes everything from ‘lotus’ shoes for Chinese-bound feet and protective Inuit boots, to Marilyn Monroe’s stilettos and Madonna’s platforms.

This extraordinary museum offers an unusual insight into the tastes, habits and horrors of societies and cultures (via some sole-searching). Mrs. Bata began her private shoe collection in the 1940s, handpicking footwear from around the globe until it outgrew its storage space. In 1979 the family created the Bata Show Museum Foundation, moving to this museum location in 1995. Adult tickets are $14, but every Thursday 5-8pm admission is pay-what-you-can.
