Vinophiles might feel stuck for things to do in Val d’Anniviers, but not if we let you in on the secrets of a local tradition. For 400 years locals have been bringing wine up from a vineyard in the Rhone Valley and aging it close to the glaciers in huge larch barrels. The tartar on the inside of the barrels is often up to five-centimetres thick, and the wine is generally aged for at least 25 years that gives it a peculiar taste. Each June new wine is added to the top of the 500-litre barrels, mixing in with harvests from previous years. The wine is only used for the private consumption of the locals and is not for sale in shops or restaurants. Get to know a local and get involved.rn
