Rocher du Charvet
A 20-minute hike from the top of the Grand Pre lift takes you to the Couloir des Pisteurs, regarded as one of the best runs in Val d’Isere. There are plenty of technical challenges on the way down – it is narrow at the top, icy and steep at first – but one any seasoned skier will want to tick off. Take a guide and a rope as there’s a chance of getting in trouble without either.
That said, there’s an escape route down through the Charvet snowfield for anyone who has second thoughts; once back on the prepared slopes have fun charging down the mountain and back into Val d’Isere. Ski under the Santons chairlift down to the top of the Fountain Froide lift, then take the short ride up to the sunny Bellavarde summit. Peel off to the right and take the meandering Face black run, which will dump you back in the village.
