Hg2 : The Hedonist

Alden Hotel Splügenschloss

Modern, chic and very discreet, it’s no surprise that Prince William and David Beckham checked into the Alden, one of the smartest hotels in Zürich, during their 2010 FIFA-wooing trip.

Europe’s smallest five-star hotel weighs in at just 21 suites and one double room. But what rooms they are: behind the elegant 19th-century façade period features are married to state-of-the-art technology in a stylishly low-key way. A sleek cream and brown palate runs throughout the hotel, from the elegant Per Te restaurant to the cosy library with its beaten-up leather sofas and floor-to-ceiling bookcases and the suites.

Combining superlative design with great charm, the suites are punctuated by modern art and interesting antiques. All are decently sized, but the executive suites are positively huge and the loft suites have terraces, although the health-minded will have to race to book the one that comes with exercise bike and sauna. The Alden’s ethos is to create a home away from home; with individually
decorated rooms and charming service, it more than succeeds.
