Hotel du Théâtre
One of the most affordable places to stay in Zürich, the Hotel du Théâtre was so-named for its in-house theatre – sadly now long gone, but its legacy remains. A complete renovation 10 years ago by renowned local architect Pia Schmid created a modern hotel in an historic shell. Aimed at business travellers, the rooms are stylishly minimalist with dark wood floors, white walls and low beds with glass headboards.
Touches of colour come from the covetable Ruth Baettig photos, stills taken from various plays staged in the 50’s given a contemporary makeover and printed on glass. Take a moment to admire the carpet, designed for the hotel it incorporated quotes from Woody Allen, Janis Joplin and Andy Warhol. The 1st floor the La Suite lounge has dramatic floor to ceiling windows with a bird’s eye view of the sweet red funicular trundling up and down from the university. Open to guests only for breakfasts, it opens to all in the evenings for drinks and light snacks.
