A cultural, social and political landmark, the ‘People’s
House’ was founded in 1910 as a place where ‘exploited workers’ could eat, bathe
and exchange ideas. 100 years later, factory workers have given way to fashionistas,
but the eating, bathing and exchange of ideas are still on offer.
Housed in a
dramatic building on Stauffacherstrasse, Volkshaus has a popular bar, a sauna and an enormous restaurant, cleverly divided into intimate
sections by stripey velvet-covered screens. The kitchen turns out top notch
Swiss cooking with some inventive touches; deer is served with a cinnamon-chilli jus, grilled goats cheese with a salad of beetroot, fig and
chestnuts and succulent beef fillet with a creamy cognac sauce.
The perfect place
to start an evening of Kreis 4 fun, the scene is low key cool; from Kreis 4 creative types revving up for a party to friends grabbing a
quick bite in their neighbourhood favourite.
