E. G. Bührle Collection
A Zürich industrialist, Emil Georg Bührle amassed one of the
most important 20th century private collections of European Art
before his death in 1956. The collection centres on French Impressionist and
Post-Impressionist work, but ranges from Italian painting in the 16th
century to 20th century French avant-garde work, all aimed at
illustrating the evolution of artistic freedom.
In 1960, Bührle’s family
creating a Foundation in his name, opening a museum containing 200 works from
the collection in a villa adjoining his former home. Open
to the public by appointment only, this is one of Zürich’s most intimate
artistic experiences.
