Hg2 : The Hedonist

Pippa de Bruyn

Durban-born and Jo’burg-bred Pippa de Bruyn knew she had to move to Cape Town from the first time she sat watching the waves break over the Clifton boulders aged eight. A decade later she did, and has now lived there for 25 years. She travels extensively in Africa, Europe and the East on writing assignments, but no matter how exotic the destination is always grateful to return to her home on the slopes of Table Mountain. She loves the freshness of the water – unrecycled, from the mountains – that spills from Cape Town’s taps, being pummeled by big waves on the False Bay coast, drinking gin and tonic with loads of fresh mint followed a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from the Elim or Durbanville region on a hot day, but loathes the threat of running out of fresh water by 2014, waiting, inconsiderate drivers, editors who change my copy, and death. What makes her a hedonist? “The only reason I am not a full-blown alcoholic is to avoid having to stop.”
