12 Decades

It’s apt that the first and only art hotel in Johannesburg is situated in the Maboneng precinct – the city’s burgeoning art district. 12 Decades opened in 2010 to much acclaim, primarily for its concept of creating 12 rooms that are styled by local artists to reflect twelve decades of Jo’burg’s history from 1886 to present day. From the moment you walk in the lobby, the experience is closer to an interactive art gallery than a hotel – white washed walls give way to urban decay-inspired art-slash-seating, and the decor certainly hearkens to a kind of modern industrial chic, with sparse splashes of colour set against muted greys and whites. Each room at the (rather cutely named, we agree) 12 Decades is a study in local art history done by a real artist(s), with a heavy emphasis on the Bauhaus style that so heavily influenced Johannesburg. Though perhaps some rooms, such as the ‘House that Jack Built’, which is kitted out primarily in plywood, aren’t as luxuriously sumptuous as one might expect a hotel room to be, if you don’t mind literally sleeping in an art installation, they are certainly interesting and provide some serious insight into the Johannesburg of today.
