Hidden away in a steep alley in North Beach, 15 Romolo is one of those San Francisco bars, where being ‘in the know’ is the only way to find it. This is a modern speakeasy bar associated with the Hotel Basque, information you really only need in order to find the place, which is otherwise unmarked. The owners completed a makeover in early 2009, making it sultrier and darker and practically an all-new destination for those seeking a well-mixed drink. Another welcome new addition is a menu of tasty, upscale bar snacks that are perfect for soaking up the cocktails you’re bound to down. The DJs are often quite good, especially on Sunday night. The scene is young and more stylish than the crowds hitting the bigger North Beach venues. But beware, the small space is packed to its nightclub gills on weekends.
