Hg2 : The Hedonist

8 Hoxton Square

Found right on the edge of Hoxton Square (yes, as its name suggests), 8 Hoxton Square could well be overrun with the drunk and stumbling crowds that pestilentially swarm into this part of town on weekend evenings. But, marvellously, it isn’t. Instead, the restaurant is unfussy, warm without being raucous – a demonstration of ideal hospitality. Part of that can be attributed to the staff, who are helpful but unobtrusive, and happy to guide when menu questions arise. And arise they might: seasonal fare is the mission, and as such the offerings change everyday. When we dined, delicately fried courgette flower stuffed with ricotta sat alongside smoked pigeon and damson. But the stunner was the Dexter onglet for two, which consisted of a massive pile of ruby rare strips of meat, buddied up with mustardy endives and garlic pan-fried potatoes that were transcendentally good. When finished up with a seasonal dessert like peach carpaccio with strawberries and yogurt-y buttermilk sorbet, a delicious delirium ensued.
