A Santa Lucia

A Milanese institution as much as a restaurant, A Santa Lucia recently celebrated its 85th anniversary. Although no longer in the original 1920s location, everything from the kitchen to the signage was moved to its current site in San Babila, just down the road from the venerable towers of the Duomo. Serving classic Neapolitan cuisine in elegant, historic surrounds, A Santa Lucia has been the meeting place and feeding ground for the Italian and international glitterati over the decades, hosting the likes of Placido Domingo, Maria Callas and Frank Sinatra; just take a look at the signed portraits festooning the otherwise white walls for other familiar faces.

A throwback to the heyday of dinner coats and martinis, A Santa Lucia offers a taste of Milan in the ’30s without the burden of a hefty price tag; think dark wood panelling, crisp white linens and main courses under 25 Euros. One of the restaurant’s signature dishes is the Rigatoni Strascicati; a simple, but delicious dish of pasta cooked with small mountain tomatoes, basil and chilli. But with A Santa Lucia’s Neapolitan heritage, a pizza is almost obligatory; best washed down with a bottle of one of Italy’s best red wines.
