Hg2 : The Hedonist

A to Z Café

A wide-eyed young girl with a cute dress and smile to match clutching a knife. The menacing glare of a demonic red-capped baby. The innocently unsettling images of Yoshitomo Nara have catapulted him to the lofty heights of one of Japan’s most successful pop artists.

Those keen for an art fix with their tea should head to A to Z Café, a collaboration between Nara and the equally hip Osaka-based design unit Graf. A lift to the fifth floor of an Aoyama building opens onto a space with lots of wood, cosy white tables, church-like chairs and comfy vintage-style sofas creating an unexpectedly urban rustic feel. Centre stage among the tables is a slightly surreal small wooden house in which the artist showcases random aspects of his work.

A laid-back atmosphere prevails among cool clientele and staff alike – who fortunately don’t resemble the scary young characters normally inhabiting Nara’s works.
