Airstream Rooftop

Fancy an alternative look at the city’s downtown business district? Try one of the best rooftop bars in Cape Town, located in the city’s longest-serving hotel. It may only be a few floors up, but surrounded by concrete office blocks and glass towers, it is as close to experiencing Cape Town as some kind of toned down Gotham as you’re ever going to find. And you get to scope out the Airstream Trailer Park, the collection of vintage steel-skin caravans that’s been converted into a hotel for the adventurous and budget-minded. Also up here is the city’s one and only rooftop cinema, the Pink Flamingo (see Culture)-during screenings on Thursdays and Sundays, the bar stays open later. Fridays often sees the occasional music mini-event held up here; particularly entertaining is local cult figure, Dave Ferguson, who does magical things with his harmonica, and is a regular up here (typically between 6 and 8pm). The rooftop bar is decidedly more novelty-geared than an exercise in class: service at the bar-which is simply too tiny to cope with demand-can be sluggish and standoffish, and the cocktails aren’t perfect (‘though the on-tap frozen daiquiris are a quick fix against the heat of summer).
