20km to the west of Almaty in the Aksai Gorge, a small Russian Orthodox Monastery has been built on the site of a former monastery destroyed by the Bolsheviks in the early years of the Soviet Union. If you’re prepared for a short hike, it’s possible to visit the few monks living here and to see the wooden monastery, which was built in memory of the martyred priests Seraphim and Feognost.
