Hg2 : The Hedonist

Conran does cafés – in London! In a sign of the times, uber-restaurateur Terence Conran has stepped down to join the small movement. Albion is the ground-floor ‘caff’- his words – of the Boundary Project, which also includes a micro-hotel (see Sleep) and restaurant (see Eat). Hailing the simple pleasures of British nostalgia, Albion (geddit?) is all plump Brown Betty teapots with knitted cosies, Tate & Lyle Golden Syrup tins as cutlery pots, tractor seats for stools, and, just like your trad greasy spoon, a no-booking policy. But Albion is by no means low-rent, thanks to clean Conran lines and the patronage of the Shoreditcherati (ad execs from nearby Mother, upstarts exploiting the free WiFi, architects filling the communal oak tables with warehouse conversion plans, as this indeed was). Generous, comforting classics (pie, fish and chips, Welsh rarebit, apple and cinnamon crumble) mostly come in under a tenner, plus there are English ales, a decent wine list and cocktails, and a deli selling the likes of Daylesford Organic, Neal’s Yard Dairy and Barton Court, Terence Conran’s country home. Its onsite bakery even has a Twitter feed (@albionsoven) announcing fresh batches. Trust Conran to improve on the past.
