Hg2 : The Hedonist

Altyn Emel

This National Park, just to the northeast of Lake Kapchagai, covers 90 square kilometres between the Ile River and the Ak Tau mountain range. A habitat for a rich variety of wildlife including steppe antelope, the park is best known for the beautiful ‘singing’ sand dunes (some of which are 80m in height) that lie at the eastern end of the park and hum in the wind. In addition, there are ancient Scythian burial mounds (nomadic tribes that populated the Kazakh steppe between the eighth- and second-centuries BC) and Bronze Age petroglyphs in some of the valleys within the park.
