Aman Resorts has taken a city break, and after a few days of touring the city, you should take one too at this, one of London’s spas. The luxury Asian spa chain’s first urban spa is found, fittingly, in the Connaught Hotel’s new west wing. Like a sepia photograph, its understated neutral fittings and furnishings (gold silks against cool granite and white marble) give it a timelessly elegant feel. It is a boutique affair – just five treatment rooms (one for couples), a pool and a steam room – but its star treatment, the 2.5-hour ‘Aman Experiences’ (£280), takes you to paradise and back (‘Aman’ is Sanskrit for peace). Based around holistic Thai, Indian, Chinese and Navajo healing techniques, their grounding yet energizing capabilities make you feel you are partaking in a sacred ritual, while the organic Sodashi scrubs and oils applied make skin silkier than an emperor’s robe. These treatments also give the golden ticket to the steam and pool facilities usually reserved for hotel guests – as the staff explain, ‘Johnny Depp may not appreciate too many other people if he is taking a swim’. Now that’s access.
