Angelina’s
Located as it is, between Place Vendôme and the Louvre, its entrance under the colonnade opposite the Jardin des Tuileries, Café Angelina was never going to be any kind of secret. Honestly, the queues are such, you might dismiss it as a tourist trap. But don’t strop off to look for somewhere emptier – enjoy the appetising wait. Beyond the shop selling biscuits, jams and pâtisserie, sweet-toothed pilgrims sit in the grand tearoom, among gilded mouldings, great murals and mirrors. Everything is charmingly worn, from the red carpet to the brown leather chairs and green marble tables, constantly occupied by dozens of happy cake eaters. The waiters try to play up to the off-hand Parisian stereotype, but can’t help actually being helpful and considerate. Then, of course, there’s the reason you’re there: sugary pastries and sublime hot chocolate. Both are yumsters, and worth the steep prices, but do go strictly either-or, unless you’ve literally just walked around the whole Louvre.
