Antico Arco

Although this is one of the places to eat in Rome which is a little out of the way at the top of the Gianicolo (near the Doria Pamphili park), Antico Arco is well worth the short taxi ride up to the top of Via Garibaldi. Set in a renovated villa, this warm and modern restaurant creates the feel of dining in a private home, especially in the cosy attic room upstairs. This is added to with the homemade selection of breads and the excellent house olive oil. Dishes are considered and carefully crafted to delicious effect while service is competent and convivial without being too overbearing. A chilled-out, loungey background soundtrack strikes the right note between trendy and classy. Rather than getting a taxi back, amble down the Via Garibaldi on your descent and navigate the couples in flagrante delictorum for one of Rome’s most romantic panoramas. With the dramatic arch of San Pancrazio behind you (home to regular summer street parties), take the steep stairs on the left (stilettos/ joints permitting) that lead right down into Trastevere’s warren of streets for a post-supper passeggiata and a spot of bar-hopping. It’s popular with staff from the nearby American University and a predominantly Italian crowd, so be sure to book a table.
