Hg2 : The Hedonist

Antique Garage

One of the more charming, attitude-free places to eat in New York’s Soho, the Antique Garage – a former auto garage now decorated entirely in for-sale antiques – rides high on its charms yet never lets diners down when it comes to well-conceived, flavorful mezze plates from chef/owner Utku Cinel. Cinel manipulates his fresh, pan-Mediterranean ingredients with an alchemic flair – he cites French, Italian, and Turkish influences as well as modernized Ottoman cuisine – and serves his punchy, colorful offerings in handsome vintage dishware. Some favorites: spicy shrimp sautéed in butter with Roma tomatoes and hot peppers, grilled Turkish-spiced lamb and beef meatballs, and the eye-pleasing Shepherd salad with its chunky chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, and green peppers. A sidewalk seat during the summer months, when the garage door lifts onto the street, is bliss.
