Apollo Banana Leaf
Not somewhere to be approached with a raging hangover, if only because of the disconcerting combination of canned music, mirrors and crap ethnic art, this simple café in Tooting is a destination for local Tamil families who only pay attention to the affordable Sri Lankan cooking. The Sri Lankan specialities share space on the menu with north Indian dishes. But it’s the southern subcontinent seafood dishes such as fish cutlets, crab curry and squid curry – at if not quite authentic Sri Lankan prices, as close as you’ll get anywhere in London – that are more worthy of investigation. Trevor Gulliver, the restaurateur behind St John, a fan, says, ‘It’s remarkably cheap, portions are generous and they’ll pack up what you can’t finish to take away.’ Its unlicensed but there’s no charge for corkage and a surfeit of nearby off-licences.
