Hg2 : The Hedonist

Ark Gallery

Curated by art and architecture expert Elizavetta Grigorievna, Ark Gallery plays host to a variety of artworks from artists living and working in Kazakhstan. Exhibitions, both group and solo, are regularly staged, with the main season running from September to June – drop in or call ahead to find out what’s on. The pieces are predominantly paintings but draw on a mixture of styles and themes, from bucolic scenes of the steppe to bold, graphic modern works. Artists to look out for include: Alexei Utkin, who creates attractive Almaty street scenes that are never twee; Saule Suleimanova, whose distinctive mixed media pieces seem to reflect both a love for her city and a lament for the loss of old traditions; and Vyacheslav Lui Ko, whose intricate, Renaissance-referencing graphics and paintings are unique and intriguing. Whilst the works exhibited are mostly from contemporary artists, Elizavetta is also planning to stage an exhibition of pieces from artists working under the Soviet Union in the near future – definitely one to watch out for.
