If you like your coffee in a porcelain cup, or your gin in a crystal glass, then Arquibar might be just the ticket. Hidden away inside ‘La Traviesa de Conde Duque’ (an architectural firm), this little café-cum-bar serves up afternoon cakes to the sweet sounds of the 1920s.
You’ll have to squeeze in to enjoy this one; with only five tables it feels more like an old fashioned lounge than a café. Everything has been carefully considered here, with vintage furnishings, fresh flowers and perfume in the bathrooms – just in case. Architects Ana and Elisa have transformed the Madrid coffee shop experience with Arquibar, turning their workshop space into an intimate haven reminiscent of an English Tea room.
At night things become a little livelier with some choice cocktails. The highlight is the Gin Nordes, a rare premium gin from Galicia distilled from the Alberino grape – the perfect nightcap after an evening dining out in the surrounding Chambari district.
For those without a sweet tooth, there’s a great choice of gourmet sandwiches and quiches on offer, and a classic brunch is served on weekends.
