Hg2 : The Hedonist

The latest and greatest in a rash of contemporary art spaces that litter the buzzing Beyoglu area. And like many other of the area’s galleries, Arter pulls in the curious with accessible exhibitions, free entry, late opening hours and a central location. Laid out over four floors inside a big bougeois mansion, the centre is a supreme space, especially for the themed group exhibitions that are the specialty of the house. German mastermind René Block curated the opening show, which was cheekily named Starter, and recent displays have been curated with the help of such luminaries at Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Like many art institutions in Istanbul, Arter is patronised by the truly wealthy, in this case the Koç family, which has been offering classic and contemporary art before the public’s gaze since the 1980s.
