There’s only so much hedonism a zoo can offer; mammals, fish and birds not being known for their wild bohemian ways. But, Artis is more interactive and educational than most zoos, and the inhabitants all seem to be well cared for, making it a jolly spot to stroll off a hangover. There are more than 650 species of animal, with all the usual suspects – big cats, giraffes, mammals of the African savannah, birds of prey and so on. There’s also a good selection of European species, a petting zoo, a section on Dutch native species, a planetarium, butterfly house, picnic space and, occasionally, face painting for nippers (or, for that matter, adults). It runs English-language tours on Sunday mornings at 11am, and is open until 10pm on Saturdays in July and August.
