Asian Art Museum
Now settled into its remarkable digs near Civic Center and City Hall, the Asian Art Museum has emerged as one of best San Francisco sights, the most preeminent arts and culture institution and museum in town. Built in the former home of the Main Library, a 1917 Beaux Arts gem, the museum is a dazzling combination of modern elegance and historic architecture. It is one of the largest museums in the West devoted exclusively to Asian art, with some 15,000 pieces spanning 6,000 years of Asian history. The Asian has become, somewhat unexpectedly, a trendy hangout. The Art After Hours evenings offer a heady mix of art, cocktails, DJ music, and mingling. Unfortunately, they only happen four Wednesdays each year.
