Hg2 : The Hedonist

The words ‘cheap’ and ‘sushi’ are rarely seen together in the same sentence and when they are it’s more than likely in reference to somewhere other than the London’s West End – or a warning to eat elsewhere at all costs. Atari-Ya just off Oxford Street is a rare exception providing quality bargain basement sushi and sashimi by virtue of the fact that its parent company is a Japanese fish wholesaler that supplies many of London’s sushi restaurants. Also available are simple cooked dishes such as una don, grilled eel coated in a sweet sauce and served over rice. Unlicensed (grab a weird and wonderful Japanese soft drink instead) it’s laid out like a cramped deli where you can, in theory, eat in by somehow grabbing one of a handful of seats but Jason Atherton, head chef of Maze, swears by their takeaway.
