The oddly titled contemporary Berlin restaurant Neuer Bamberger Reiter – New Horseman of Bamberg – takes its name from a famous medieval sculpture located in the cathedral of Bamberg in Northern Bavaria. Open since 2003, it is housed in what used to be the bistro of the old restaurant ‘Bamberger Reiter’, which closed down several years ago. The new owners have continued the old traditions with a detailed Austrian and modern German menu, well known for its fresh fish dishes, quail roulades and rack of lamb. Contrasting with the contemporary cooking, service and atmosphere the décor is very much ‘Old Germany’. The adjacent bistro serves a slightly more limited (but still delicious) and cheaper menu, though genuine foodies won’t want to miss out on the main restaurant experience. Outside seating in the garden is available during summer.
