Bar Coluzzi
This is arguably one of the first proper coffee shops in Sydney. Among the bursting-at-the-seams-with-eateries Victoria Street and right next door to Latteria (nothing like a bit of friendly café rivalry), Bar Coluzzi stands proud (and quite rightly so). It’s the oldest café on the strip and was opened in 1957 by Italian-born Luigi Coluzzi, who was one of the middleweight boxing greats of the ’50s and, some would say, the man who rescued Australia from the heinous clutches of instant coffee. The walls of this miniscule café are plastered with photos of Luigi pumping his fists ring-side, though unfortunately the gregarious Italian sold the business in 2000 and opened up a new café in the suburb of Randwick. Nevertheless, Coluzzi’s colourful regulars, powerbrokers and celebrities still call it home. Get a stool out on the pavement, except in the early morning, when the 50-strong ‘Coluzzi bunch’ (cyclists) descends on the café in Lycra-clad droves.
