The entrance isn’t the most enticing you’ll ever come across, but head inside and you’ll find the huge, subterranean rabbit warren of rooms that make up Bar Garbage; a laid-back spot that’s a hit with Almaty’s coolest kids. The garbage theme manifests itself in subtle, humorous ways – ‘installations’ crafted from empty bottles, ashtrays fashioned from old tin cans and waiting staff dressed in the bright orange overalls of municipal waste collectors – and there’s a pleasingly rough ‘n’ ready feel to the place with exposed brickwork and industrial metal pipes overhead. Drinks are well-priced by Almaty standards, though the prices themselves are a little unusual with vodka shots at 199 KZT apiece and cocktails from an extensive list at 777 KZT. If the standard-size cocktail isn’t sufficient, there are some king-size options to try out at 1,111 KZT. Put your best foot forward and your photo may just end up alongside those of other revellers pegged up on washing lines hung about the place.
