Amsterdam’s coffee shops tend to fall into one of two categories – brash tourist magnet (such as the Bulldog, Grasshopper, or most in the RLD), or chilled out smoking den with a welcoming vibe. Barney’s Coffeeshop, along with Barney’s Uptown, up the road at 105, and Barney’s Lounge on Reguliersgracht in the Canal Belt, falls firmly into the latter category. It is probably the best presented coffee shop in town, with lounge seating, mahogany finishes, and a competent and extensive kitchen, capable of satiating the most ravenous and complex munchies imaginable. Uptown also serves alcohol with the weed, and more substantial meals. The Lounge may be the most sophisticated coffee shop in the city, and wouldn’t be out of place (minus the weed) in the posher parts of Manhattan. The hash and weed are all organic, and a number of strains have won prizes at the annual Cannabis Cup. If you plan on smoking weed in Amsterdam, one of Barney’s stores might be the best place to start.
