Barometre is possibly the most Boho of the bars in Beirut. And that means it is full of intellectuals, oud players, musicians, writers, hacks and a few students. The tiny room with a small bar and four tables doesn’t seem much of a place, but what it has is local charm – and you definitely don’t get many tourists walking in.
Barometre is more about bottles of beer and straight liquor than fancy cocktails and pink umbrellas. The music is taken from Arabic greats like Umm Khaltoum, Fairuz and Abdel Wahab. Expect great conversations – you can generally include yourself in whatever debate’s going on in the corner – and a friendly atmosphere.
On special nights, which means whenever the owner feels like it, he’ll pick up his oud and come and sing some Arabic classical favourites – much to the delight of the locals, who generally sing along loudly and often out of tune.
