Beef & Brew
It’s about time restaurants paid attention to craft beer. Cocktails are swell and wine is fine – but for many dishes, a well-crafted brew might be the best pairing of all. And that’s what Beef & Brew has so astutely sussed out: complete with a selection of London-made bottles and recommended pairings spelled out on the menu, they’re putting beer in the centre of the dinner equation.
Located right on Kentish Town Road, this small and buzzing little restaurant feels one part minimalist, hipster eatery and one part throwback canteen. Chef Jessica Simmons, a protégée of Angela Hartnett, is behind the menu, which leans heavily towards steaks, meat buns, and other carnivorous fare. The craggy hanger steak, just a tenner, is best for those who don’t require a carb vehicle; otherwise, we gobbled up a salt beef bun dribbling with beer cheese in seconds. The sides are worth investigating, too – particularly the oven-baked cheese gnocchi and parmesan-dusted polenta chunks.
Of course, you can order wine and cocktails (both happen to be quite good, here). But if you ask us, a beer flight to share is the perfect pudding.
