Hg2 : The Hedonist

Bella Blu

Tony Bourdain is known far and wide these days for his swash-buckling culinary adventures that tend to lean more towards the dare-oriented than the demure, so we were not a little bit surprised when his pick for one of the most under-rated eateries in the city fell within the brightly painted walls of this gracious little Upper East Side trattoria.

While there are occasionally a few far-flung ingredient additions that veer the menu away from traditional boot country, we like to go straight for the fresh, cushy buffalo mozzarella with luscious roasted peppers, fresh basil, and slices of beefsteak tomatoes and the tagliatelle draped in a rustic Chianti-braised meat sauce and dotted with bits of porcini mushroom, and maybe even a nice side of garlicky Swiss chard made by chef Paolo Floess.

Ask for a window seat on warm evenings when the entire wall of accordion front doors are opened wide onto the sidewalk for al fresco dining.
