Blue Bar

One of the most popular business bars in London, five-star Berkeley Hotel’s in-house bar is – like it says on the packet – all blue. Not just any old blue, mind, but a rather fine Lutyens blue – which won’t mean much unless you happen to know the favourite colour of the late, great Edwardian architect Edwin Lutyens (whose original carved panelling decorates the walls). OK, so it’s a lavender blue, as prescribed by David Collins, interior designer to the stars and famed for breathing modernity into classics (see Claridge’s Bar). Behind Venetian glass doors is sophistication in a salon – a mix of modern and antique, with outrageously laidback occasional chairs in – what else – Lutyens blue leather. The extensive selection of champagnes, whiskies and classic cocktails lubricate a stylish post-work crowd into relaxing after a hard day’s power-broking; the tapas-style bar menu keeps the svelte figures trim while a well-stocked humidor keeps the oligarchs chomping on their Double Coronas into the early hours of the morning. With seating for only 50 you know you’re going to be in exclusive company.
