Hg2 : The Hedonist

Bookworm Café

More than just a café, the Bookworm is a Beijing institution. Both literary giants and literary wannabes make the pilgrimage here for the home-style food, endless caffeine and one of the best selections of English books in the capital. If you’re lucky you may get to catch a lecture by Thomas Friedman or Peter Hessler who always stop by when they’re in town. The walls are lined with shelves of books, which comprise a lending library that you can peruse over coffee or checkout with a small membership fee. The pine wood tables, clumps of twenty-somethings hovering around laptops and half-eaten sandwiches make it feel like a café in any college town around the world. In the back room they also have a good range of English books on sale as well as jewelry and other handmade items by local artisans. The Bookworm Literary Festival held in March has become the most important event of its kind in Beijing every year so catch it if you can.
