Widely considered to be one of the best Turkish restaurants in town, this Borsa is a chic part of an old, family-run chain, which began 75 years ago. The location is a bit of a duffer, being the unappealing Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Centre in Harbiye, just north of Taksim Square. Nevertheless, Istanbul’s well-heeled professionals flock in from the surrounding smart neighbourhoods and regularly fill out the restaurant’s 500-person capacity, giving the place a convivial buzz. The service is super-slick and highly-attentive for such a large place and the food, too, is top-notch, with the usual Turkish menu of meze followed by a deliciously meaty selection of mains. The classic Turkish aubergine dish, Imam bayildi, meaning ‘the Imam fainted’ (because it was so delicious rather than because of food poisoning), the oven-cooked lamb (kuzu tandir) and the grilled veal meatballs in pita (dana köfte) are perennial favourites. Reservations are essential.
