Hg2 : The Hedonist

Café Beaubourg

With a wide-angle view of the Pompidou Centre’s plaza and its happenings, this cafe has become a classic since it was opened by the Costes brothers in 1985; once hip, it is now more of a BCBG pitstop. Its modern design is holding up well, especially now it’s be- ginning to look a bit retro. On a sunny day, the terrace tables and chairs in white steel and coloured plastic are colonised completely by members of the chattering classes and users of the free WiFi. Inside, white-marble floors, concrete columns and modern art make for a cerebral yet chilled-out brasserie, where solitary intellos have lunch with their laptops, and black-clad waiters stride to and fro bearing cocktails, salads, and steak tartare poele. There’s tons of space, with a sweeping, polished concrete staircase leading to a second floor.
