Hg2 : The Hedonist

Café Buenos Aires

Clamber up a cobbled staircase to this Argentinian restaurant in Lisbon and follow the strum-and-chime rhythm of tango music into a charming Old World dining room that’s transported straight out of Buenos Aires’s San Telmo district. Two local sisters run this boho Argentinian restaurant in Lisbon, one of whom was married to a Porteño.

By night the cafe crackles with the buzz of local families and frisky tango dancers dining on endive and pear salad, tartines and, of course, fat juicy steak. The butter-tender beef is imported from the Argentinean Pampas and served with toasty brown fries and a side of tomato salad – all washed down with jugs of Malbec.

The look is unmistakably Buenos Aires, a sort of cluttered elegance tops the chessboard flooring with tables crammed in close together – there’s even a spare chair hanging from the ceiling. If it’s all a bit too cramped, remind yourself that your still in Lisbon by taking a seat on the wobbly tables outside for stunning views over Rossio and onto the Castelo de São Jorge.
