Cafe Caprice

For a couple of seasons now, this has, for reasons unknown, been the most popular sundowner hangout in Camps Bay (which automatically makes it one of the most popular cocktail bars in Cape Town), meaning it gets extremely packed with the see-and-be-seen crowd, often overflowing onto the sidewalk directly across the road from the city’s equally popular beach. It’s quite a small venue, with two efficient bars facing one another from either end; there are a handful of loungey seating areas (you’ll need to book these or ask your concierge to make special arrangements if you want to sit here in summer), and a few tables (preferably for diners) out on the sidewalk. Befriend one of the beefy barmen by leaving a large tip or secure a waitress as soon as you arrive and make sure to hold her attention-or be prepared to wait a while for your drinks. What makes Caprice work are the views of the setting sun, framed here by columns and arches that are backlit in a golden glow once it starts to get dark. The effect is pure glam, even if the crowd gets raucous and uncouth and there are no restrictions on what you wear-many punters come straight off the beach and just don’t leave until way after midnight.
