Café Cluny
Power sophisticates from the fashion and media worlds consider this chic spot one of the best places to eat in New York, across the way from wildly popular watering hole the Beatrice Inn (not to mention catty-corner from our favorite lesbian bar, the Cubbyhole). Co-owned by Lynn Wagenknecht – who founded the Odeon with her ex and continues to be a part of its never-ending Bright Lights, Big City success, not to mention Café Luxembourg – Café Cluny is a breath of fresh air. Its atmosphere is gentle, the bar is small yet inviting, the hosts are sweet and knowledgeable, and the pared-down bistro menu is well thought out and consistently spot-on. The Eden Brook trout amandine is fragrant and perfectly cooked, while the New York strip ‘steak frites’ are appropriately decadent. For a relatively small venue, the wine list is sizable, and there’s something for everyone.
