Hg2 : The Hedonist

Café du Livre

Run by the amiable, people-loving Sandra Zwollo, this bookshop, café and restaurant opened in January 2006 and has become a prime hang-out for everyone from local literati types to studious Moroccans in search of a quiet place to read. Located just down the road from the well-known Catanzaro restaurant, the place is slightly hidden away through an archway and within the grounds of a somewhat scruffy hotel. To walk through the glass door, however, is to enter a Zen-like world of relaxed music, muffled chat and slick chess moves. To the left is a well-stocked bookshop/reading area; to the right, a more conventional café with dining tables, the lightest 19th-century Persian decorative touches and a fireplace that crackles alive in winter. The menu focuses on home-made, fresh dishes like salads, hamburgers and succulent speared kebabs, all for very reasonable prices. Breakfast here is popular, as is the free WiFi. The place has an alcohol licence so you can enjoy a glass of wine here in the evenings too.
