Café Einstein
A Berlin café institution, this classic Viennese coffee house has spawned its own high street chain, but this particular branch retains its traditional character and waiting staff. Albeit a little stuffy, Einstein is a piece of living history. Alongside coffees and cakes fit for a connoisseur a selection of ‘light’ dishes (including a legendary Wiener Schnitzel) are also served. Staff are formal but always friendly and attentive. From opening to close, Einstein enjoys a steady turnover and table reservations are recommended for lunch. A constant hustle brings life to the building, but this still isn’t the spot to sit back and savour a quiet cup of tea. Inevitably, tourists descend on Einstein but it continues to be a favourite with locals who enjoy a sweet taste of the high life. On the first floor is a new bar called Lebensstern, kitted out in 1920s style glamour and offering good cocktails (mainly gin).
