Hg2 : The Hedonist

Café Français

Gilbert and Thierry Costes (of the Hotel variety) have done it again with their newest addition to the Beaumarly set. A strange and surreal palace of wonder, Café Français is located on the historic Place de la Bastille, and is doused with a patriotic wash of Tricolour that is fervently appropriate to its republican setting. Lavish velvet chairs in royal blue offset voluptuous leather in lipstick red, while palatial slabs of black and white marble tile the floor. Irregular geometric patterns clash against smooth lines and classical arches, while mirrors and natural light abound. Curving yet angular, colourful yet monochrome, jarring yet seamless, it is just the sort of spectacular, extravagant and design-forward establishment that we have come to expect from the Costes. Ask for a table in the central rotunda, and enjoy spiced lobster ravioli beneath a painted mural of clouds and blue sky. Or else be seated among wicker chairs and verdant potted plants in the garden room, and relax with a delectable millefeuille in an oasis of bourgeois calm.
