Hg2 : The Hedonist

Café Gitane

When you absolutely must be surrounded by French models, photographers, gallery owners, assorted other artsy types, and the people who love them, head to on of the sweeter – if not self-aware – cafés in New York on the trendy precipice between Soho and Nolita, where crusty baguettes, waitresses in mod outfits, and a decent offering of baked eggs await to tolerate you. While it’s fun to settle in among the fashionista throngs, you can take comfort from the fact that they are here mainly because of Café Gitane’s convenient location. If you happen upon it later in the day, its Moroccan couscous with chicken, raisins, and eggplant is rather flavorful, and the salmon pot pie is both tasty and adorable. But go for breakfast – and not on a weekend – if you really want to experience its charms, unadulterated.
