Café Le Basile
On one hand, this nonchalant retro café is a New Wave film come to life, thanks to its young clientele of Sciences Po students and profs from the faculté over the road; on the other, it’s a godsend for weary shoppers, bang in the middle of rue Grenelle, where half a dozen luxury-brand shoe designers congregate. An unpretentious, youthful spot for a beer and a croque monsieur, it comes with a Daft Punk/hip-hop soundtrack, sports on a small screen, and oversized 1960s rock portraits hanging over the Formica tables, red banquettes and 1950s prints. At the front, you can stand at a glossy red and yellow bar, or perch on red-topped stools at high tables; there’s plenty of room at the back for intellectualising and flirting.
